Since a lot of kids with Asperger&#8217;s are gifted as well, the information in this talk could prove useful to us, too. I originally posted this on my personal blog, which had very little traffic (and few posts \u2014 I could never maintain a diary). \u00a0So, here&#8217;s the outline of the talk, with a few side comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color:#000000;\">2E in Public Schools \u2014 The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Liz Pf &amp; Carolyn K<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:normal;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">BIQ Boston, April 2009<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Introductions<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Liz\u00a0(That&#8217;s me)<br \/>\nCarolyn K <\/span><a title=\"Hoagies Gifted Education\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hoagiesgifted.org\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">www.hoagiesgifted.org<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Definition of 2E<br \/>\nGifted with some sort of disability<br \/>\nOften, but not always a Learning Disability<br \/>\nSpecial services &amp;\/or accommodations are necessary in school<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">Stories<br \/>\n(Here, Carolyn and I tell the stories of our 2E daughters, Chetah and Ocelot, and how the public schools did a good job with Ocelot and a phenomenally bad job with Cheetah)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Law<br \/>\nAll children have the right to an evaluation by the school<br \/>\nHigh IQ or good grades can not be used to avoid a necessary IEP<br \/>\nThe Lillie\/Felton Letter\u00a0(This is case law specifying that kids can not be denied a special education evaluation because they are not failing school.)<br \/>\nEvery state has laws that schools must follow<br \/>\nParents are full members of the team<br \/>\nMost actions require parental consent in writing<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#000000;\">The Special Education Process<br \/>\n1. \u201cChild Study\u201d Meetings<br \/>\n2. School Evaluation (or optional private evaluation)<br \/>\n3. Qualification Meeting<br \/>\n4. Write the Plan<br \/>\n5. Implement the Plan \u2013 Measurable Goals<br \/>\n6. Review Plan annually<br \/>\n7.
